World Cup semi-finals

World Cup Semi-Finals | Late drama in Russia

Tomorrow is the match for the third place. So it’s time to look back at the World Cup semi-finals. First I want to share my opinion on this third place match. I think it’s the most useless match in the entire world of football. Every player that lost a World Cup semi-final, when he was so close to the final, is devastated and wants to go back home. I believe both Belgium and England want to skip this match, so let’s stop with this useless match.

World Cup semi-finals

Tuesday was the first day of the semi-finals with the match between France and Belgium.

France versus Belgium

The first semi-final was for many people the final of this World Cup. Both France and Belgium are considered to be too strong for England and Croatia. Belgium pretty much dominated the entire first half, but they failed to score a winning goal. Early in the second half it was Umtiti who converted a corner into the 1-0 for France. This goal was followed by some mistakes from both managers. Deschamps led Giroud on the pitch for way too long, instead of bringing on the quick Dembele, who could have struck on the counter attack. Roberto Martinez decided to take of Fellaini, the one player he brought on in the round of 16, to get back from a 2-0 deficit against Japan. For some strange reason he took him off and Belgium wasn’t really able to create a lot of danger anymore. France killed the matched and took the 1-0 bringing them to the World Cup final.

Croatia versus England

A colleague of mine asked me before this match, what my expectations were. I told him it was going to be a typical Croatia match. I said England would take the lead, Croatia would equalise and in the end penalties were going to decide the match. Somehow I came pretty close with these predictions. Kieran Trippier opened the score for England early in the match. The English squad was much better in the first half and should have scored at least a second goal. They didn’t do that and led Croatia in the game. Ivan Perisic scored the equaliser for Croatia, bringing them to their third extra time match of this tournament. Mario Mandzukic scored the 2-1 for Croatia in extra time, which makes Croatia the opponent for France in the World Cup final.

These were the World Cup semi-finals. Which one did you enjoyed the most?
