Well that was an exciting and nervous night of football in the Dutch Jupiler League. We have been talking about the exciting end of this competition for a few weeks. Three teams were playing for the title until the very last day of the competition. The second team of Ajax started this evening as table leader and ended it as the Champions of the Jupiler League. Jong Ajax wins Jupiler League, but number two Fortuna Sittard will return in the Eredivisie next season.
Jong Ajax wins Jupiler League
The second team of Ajax Amsterdam played a very good season. This team filled with talented youngster had a rough start, when friend and colleague Abdelhak Nouri collapsed during pre-season. Nouri is always seen as the biggest talent in the Ajax academy. Unfortunately we will never know how far he could have gone. The team processed this personal drama really well and they are now winners of the Jupiler League. A really good performance by such a young team.
Fortuna Sittard returns in the Eredivisie
The biggest achievement of this season is the second place of Fortuna Sittard. They finished 17th on the table in the previous season. Fortuna Sittard went from the Eredivisie tot the Jupiler League in the summer of 2002. This year’s second place is only the third time since they got relegated, that Fortuna Sittard finished in the top 10. I’m personally very happy with this result. Ajax is the club I support and after the problems with NEC earlier this season, I wanted Fortuna Sittard to finish second.
Now Jong Ajax wins Jupiler League, Fortuna Sittard retuns in the Eredivisie, NEC needs to enter the play-offs in an attempt to force promotion too. It was a great season in the Jupiler League. Even though Jong Ajax can’t promote, I do think we will see some of their players back in the Eredivisie next season.
