The third day of the Champions League group stage was one with many surprises. In this post we briefly discuss the results in all groups on the Champions League group stage day 3.
Champions League group stage day 3
Group E
It’s no secret that this is a special group for me. I’m a big Ajax fan from birth, so I like the fact that my favourite club is finally back at the highest level. Ajax had the toughest task in this group, trying to get a result away against Bayern Munich. Within the first five minutes, Mats Hummels scored the 1-0 for the Germans and I feared a big defeat for my team. Ajax grew in the match and Noussair Mazraoui surprised everyone by scoring the equaliser. From this moment it was Ajax with the better chances. The Dutch side had 8 shots on target against 4 for the Germans. None of these teams managed to score a winning goal, so Ajax took away a valuable point. In the other match of this group Benfica took an early 0-2 lead against Athens. After a red card for the Portuguese side, Athens drew level. But a late goal led eventually to a 2-3 victory for Benfica.
Group F
Manchester City escaped a second shock result in this group stage. Hoffenheim took an early lead and Man City was looking to be losing their second match in this group. Sergio Aguero scored the equaliser a few minutes after the 1-0. Hoffenheim tried to get this 1-1 over the line, but in the very last minutes of the match, David Silva scored the winning goal for Man City. In this other match it was Shakhtar Donetsk that took the lead. The Ukrainian side took 0-2 lead early in the second half, but the French side managed to drawl level. Giving Olympique Lyonnais the first place in this group after two matches.
Group G
This is another group with a shock result. CSKA Moscow scored an early goal against Real Madrid and the Spanish side never recovered from this early blow. CSKA won this match with 1-0 and takes the lead in the group. AS Roma recovered from a hard defeat against Real Madrid by winning with 5-0 against Viktoria Plzen. The Italian side takes on CSKA Moscow in the next two matches, fighting for a good chance of reaching the knock-out stages.
Group H
Juventus and Young Boys played the early match. This times suits Dybala very well, since he scored three goals in the match against the Swiss team. Juventus won this match, without the suspended Cristiano Ronaldo, easily with 3-0. It looks like they’re ready for the battle with Man United. Man United however is clearly not ready for this battle, proven by the boring 0-0 draw with Valencia.
