The second day filled with Champions League football is behind us, so it’s time to discuss the results. In this post I briefly discuss the Champions League group stage day 2 results. Read this post and be completely up-to-date on everything that happened on the first day.
Champions League group stage day 2
Group E
This is a special group for me personally. I’m a big Ajax fan for as long as I know, so I was extremely happy that we’re back in the Champions League. We started with what’s probably the easiest match in this group, at home against AEK Athens. The first half was quite slow, but Ajax took an early lead in the second half and won this match with 3-0. Benfica played at home against the big favourite to win this group Bayern Munich. The German side immediately showed why they are favourites and won this match pretty easily with 2-0.
Group F
The big favourite in this group Manchester City, caused a big shock in Group F. They got surprised at home against Olympique Lyonnais and lost this match with 2-1. The other match in this group was between Shakthar Donetsk and 1899 Hoffenheim. These teams scored two goals each, giving them both a point at the start of this Champions League season. It’s going to be interesting to see how Man City bounces back from this poor start.
Group G
The reigning Champions League winners Real Madrid started their new CL journey with a 3-0 victory over AS Roma. This is a good start for the Spanish side in a group with CSKA Moscow and Viktoria Plzen. The Czech side was heading towards a good start with a 2-1 lead, but a late penalty gave the Russians the equaliser.
Group H
Valencia versus Juventus is the most discussed match of this second day with Champions League football. Juve’s big star Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off in the first half of this match. For me this was a very poor decision by the referee, since nothing really happened. Three penalties decided the result of this match, where Pjanic netted two for Juventus and Parejo missed the one Valencia got. The other big team in this group, Manchester United, won the away match against Young Boys with 3-0.
Which of these Champions League group stage day 2 results was the biggest shock for you? Let me know in the comments.
