Spanish football is back in business, just like the German Bundesliga. Later this week the Italian Serie A and English Premier League are also back in action. The French Ligue 1 is already cancelled, just like the Dutch Eredivisie and Belgium Jupiler Pro League. What we don’t know yet is when European football will return. That’s why Enrique Cerezo, the chairman of Atletico Madrid, claims they should be appointed the Champions League trophy.
Atletico Madrid as Champions League winner?
It’s still not sure if and when the Champions League returns. Talks are it will resume in August. However, the chairman of Atletico Madrid has its own ideas on who should win the trophy this season. He believes the team that eliminated the current Champions League holder (Liverpool), should be awarded the trophy. Personally I don’t get why any club wants to get the trophy awarded in that way. Winning the Champions League is one of the best things you can do in the world of football. You want to play a final and win this final. You don’t want to get the trophy awarded because you eliminated Liverpool.
I don’t believe that the UEFA will even consider this for a second. Either we finish this UCL season, or we don’t have a trophy. BettingSpesialisten believe Bayern Munich is one of the favourites to win the Champions League this season. If they continue the form that they’re having, it will be very hard to look past them.
Why is there no clarity on European football?
Finishing domestic leagues is much easier than finishing European football. Travelling is a big risk in the spread of Covid-19. That’s why the UEFA is looking at all scenarios to finish the tournament. The most likely it will be in a kind of Euros form. Where all remaining teams in the tournament will travel to one county and finish the tournament in a few weeks.
